Hockey Coach (part-time)

The Opportunity

Winchester College are looking to appoint a highly professional hockey player to support the delivery and continued development of the School’s hockey programme across both participation and performance pathways, fostering player development, engagement, and excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, engaging coaching sessions across a range of age groups and ability levels.
  • Support all teams, within a structured coaching environment.
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate progressive training sessions aligned with programme objectives.
  • Lead and support teams during fixtures (midweek and weekends).
  • Officiate or umpire school fixtures and tournaments as required.
  • Assist in the development of player pathways, including talent identification and progression.
  • Utilise video and performance analysis tools to enhance player learning where appropriate.
  • Contribute to and monitor Individual Development Plans (IDPs).
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with pupils, parents, and staff regarding development and performance.
  • Support the organisation and administration of the hockey programme.
  • Ensure all activities comply with Health & Safety, Safeguarding, and Child Protection policies.
  • Provide basic first aid where required and report incidents in accordance with the School’s policy and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATION AND KEY QUALITIES

The Hockey Coach professional will have:

Essential Requirements

  • Proven experience in coaching or playing hockey to a high standard, preferably within a school or club environment.
  • Relevant Coaching Certification (e.g., England Hockey Sessional Coach or UKCC Level 2 equivalent).
  • Enhanced DBS check clearance.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to inspire, motivate, and build confidence in young athletes.

Desirable Skills

  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Experience utilizing video analysis or performance metrics to enhance player learning.

Start Date - a flexible start date for the right candidate with preference for commencement at the beginning of the next academic year, 01 09 2026

Hours of Work -this is a zero-hours position, typically 4-10 hours per week depending upon terms. Hours will typically be weekday afternoons and potentially Saturday afternoons during term-time only, and such other hours as are reasonably necessary to meet the needs of the College and the demands of the role.

Salary - the hourly rate is between £27.00 - £35.00 plus holiday pay for each hour worked. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

As this is a zero-hour position, the postholder will be offered work when it is available; the amount of work offered may vary.?The College is under no obligation to provide work.?Hours worked are recorded on a monthly timesheet.?The postholder pay will be paid monthly in arrears to their nominated bank or building society account.???
