Resident Head of Girls Boarding and Household

The Opportunity

The Role
Cheam is looking for an energetic, organised and approachable head of Girls Boarding and Household who has the skills, attitude and desire to be heavily integrated into many different aspects of school life at Cheam. 

For girls boarding, the person will be responsible for the happiness, well-being, health, safety and pastoral care of the girls whilst they are boarding at Cheam. This role will need close cooperation with the educational side of the school as well as boys boarding and the various property and catering services which support boarding. The Boarding role and requires someone who is both sympathetic and caring as well as organised and resilient given the nature of the position.
The Household role encompasses many different areas at Cheam including, amongst other things, the management of matrons, liaison with catering, ensuring the property is well maintained and helping coordinate school events and activities. The Household role will require a flexible mindset and ability to work independently or as part of a team, with strong communication and administrative skills.
This is a vital role for Cheam and the successful candidate will be an important part of the team. As a result, the type of person we are looking for is similar to an experienced housemistress who is looking to take on additional responsibilities and a wider role within life at an independent school.

Role requirements

  • Prior experience of working within a girls boarding house is essential.
  • Medical experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong administrative and IT skills, relevant to the role.
  • An effective communicator with good interpersonal skills.
  • A flexible and positive attitude with the ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • A sympathetic person who is patient, even-tempered and calm when under pressure.
  • An energetic person with considerable stamina who is able to cope with the long hours and different demand that that is this post requires.
  • The BSA Advanced Certificate is desirable.
  • Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, as well as a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the DBS.

 Conditions of Employment

  • Ideally the start date would be September 2021, but consideration will be given if the right candidate cannot start on that date.
  • Annual salary of circa £35,000 depending on experience.
  • Term time only, Monday to Saturday with a half day off during each week (including 3 days at the start and end of each term for preparation/clear down).
  • This is a resident role during term time and accommodation is a one bedroom flat (with its own kitchen, bathroom and living area) within the main school building with all bills covered
  • All meals provided during term time when boarders are present.
  • Support staff contributory pension scheme.
