The Perse School, Appointment of Bursar
Start date: November 2018
Attractive package on offer
The Governing Body of The Perse School invites applications for the position of Bursar in succession to Gerald Ellison, who is stepping down after twenty-one years of outstanding service.
The Perse School, founded in 1615, is one of Britain’s leading independent day schools, delivering some of the best academic results of any school in the UK. The School educates girls and boys from ages 3-18 on three attractive sites well located in Cambridge. Beyond the school’s reputation for academic excellence, there is a clear emphasis on a rounded education and a strong focus on pastoral care.
In the past two decades the Perse has opened a pre-prep, become fully co-educational, grown from 730 pupils to 1610, and invested over £50 million in capital projects to expand and enhance facilities. The Perse now has an annual turnover approaching £30 million and employs around 400 full and part time staff.
The Governing Body now seeks to appoint a Bursar to this prestigious school. The Bursar reports to the Head of The Perse School for all day to day matters, and is accountable to the governing body, via the Chair of Governors, for the effective conduct of financial affairs, sound business management and administration, and the material state of the premises.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader with extensive senior management experience. Candidates will be commercially and financially astute, and will have a keen eye both for the big picture and the small detail. They will be adept at managing complex projects, multiple stakeholders at all levels, and leading change management proactively and sensitively. Experience of financial management, information technology, school governance, employment law, property, contracts, investment and legal matters would be advantageous.
A sharp mind and an energetic and collegiate approach are essential, as is proven leadership ability. Candidates should have a strong empathy with The Perse’s vision and values.
