Job description

About the School:

Set in 50 acres of beautiful Kent countryside and only an hour’s train journey from London, Dulwich Preparatory School, Cranbrook is a highly successful and well-regarded day and flexible boarding school.

The School has over 500 children aged 3 to 13 divided across three departments: Nash House (Nursery and Reception), Little Stream (Years 1 – 4) and Upper School (Years 5 – 8).  We have excellent modern facilities, an expert teaching staff, a broad and stimulating curriculum and great attention is paid to pastoral care and to the happiness of the children. We offer day and flexible boarding to children in Year 4 and above.

About the Role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual with a great sense of humour to join our friendly and welcoming resident boarding team of 6 staff from January 2018 to look after approximately 20 girls in their boarding house.

In the role of Residential Tutor you will participate in the extra-curricular activities at the School and be committed to promoting the safeguarding and wellbeing of the children.  Your key duties will include:

·        Supporting the Housemistress in the day to day running of the girls’ boarding house

·        Providing advice and support to the children

·        Being on duty 2 or 3 nights/mornings per week and supporting the girls at breakfast, boarders tea etc and assisting with prep

·        Organising activities for the children ensuring a fun and happy boarding experience

When not carrying out your boarding duties, you will provide support and assistance to the teachers and pupils in the classroom and / or on the sports field (we will ensure that you are allocated to an area of the School which most suits your skills and aspirations).

This will include a range of duties such as:

·        Preparing teaching materials and helping set up and clear down in the classroom / on the sports field

·        Supervising the children during lunch in the dining hall

·        Taking individuals and groups for reading

·        Carrying out break time duties

This position would ideally suit an experienced teaching assistant or someone considering a career as a teacher or teaching assistant.  However, most important for us is to appoint a caring, supportive and empathetic individual with strong communication skills who will be a role model for the children and an ambassador for the School.

This is predominantly a term-time only position for which we offer an attractive remuneration package: in addition to a competitive salary, we provide a bright and sunny one bedroom flat, a generous contributory pension scheme and free meals in the dining hall during term time. Please note that our accommodation is only suitable for one person and we are not able to accommodate pets.

As you will be the Residential House Tutor in the girls’ boarding house, unfortunately we are only able to accept applications from female candidates. Previous experience within a boarding environment is helpful but not essential as full training will be given.

Our Common Room Committee and boarding staff organise regular social events for both pupils and staff which means there is great community feel here at the school.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (Police Check).

How to apply

Applications should be sent to the Human Resources Manager either by e-mail to or to the School’s postal address.
